"The Naked Civil Servant" Screening Thursday, May 22nd, 11:00am The Center at Garden City
SAGE-LI hosts a viewing of “The Naked Civil Servant,” a film based on the autobiography of Quentin Crisp.
The Naked Civil Servant stars John Hurt as Crisp, a flamboyant character who publicly declared his homosexuality during the brutally homophobic and misogynistic England of the 1930s and '40s -- a time when this "alternative lifestyle" was still an offense punishable by imprisonment in Great Britain. His outlandish behavior shocked the intolerant pre-WWII British society and provoked frequent homophobic attacks, but Crisp staunchly refused to compromise his life and went on to become a cult celebrity and an international gay icon.
This colorful, heartwarming coming of age tale is by turns funny and tragic.
This event is open to everyone and all are encouraged to attend! A discussion will follow the film.
