LIGALY’s comprehensive safe schools initiative offers a broad base of services and programs to help students and staff develop a school culture that fosters support, understanding and respect for GLBT youth, families and educators. LIGALY implements the programs of the Safe Schools Initiative through collaborative partnerships with over 100 school districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties of Long Island. The programs of the Safe Schools Initiative include:
Workshops & Trainings Since 1993, LIGALY has worked with schools, colleges and universities, health and human service providers and government agencies to educate the community about the needs and experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) students and families. Over 13,000 people participate in our educational programs each year!
Educating students about the experiences of GLBT youth is a key component to creating safer and more supportive schools. LIGALY provides age-appropriate workshops for students at all educational levels to raise awareness, address bias and work to end sexual-orientation and gender-identity-based harassment, bullying and violence.
One of the primary roles of an educator is to ensure that all students participate in a learning environment that is safe, supportive and respectful. LIGALY's trainings provide educators, school staff and administrators, and those preparing for a career in education with the knowledge and skills needed to do this. As a result of participating in a LIGALY training, educators will develop a better understanding of GLBT students as well as strategies to support and nurture them.
