The Long Island Gay Parent Teacher Student Association (LI G-PTSA) is a group of parents, teachers and students who are dedicated to effecting change in their schools so GLBT youth can reach their full potential. The LI G-PTSA is a vocal and visible advocate for safe schools, working in concert with LIGALY's staff and youth leaders to achieve:
The formation of Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs in every Long Island middle and high school
Curriculum changes to include information about the GLBT civil rights movement and its leaders
Faculty training/cultural competency
The development of a support network for parents
The Long Island Gay PTSA is open to all Long Island parents, educators and students who want to create safer and more supportive schools on Long Island for GLBT youth.
For more information about the Long Island Gay PTSA, call 516.323.0011 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Parent Support Group provides social and supportive discussions for parents of GLBT children of all ages. This is a place to share, listen, and be heard. We create an informal space to meet other parents on Long Island in all stages of learning and growing with the knowledge that your child is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
The Parent Support Group meets at:
The Center at Bay Shore on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 6-7pm.
The Center at Garden City on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 7-8pm.
Excited to share with other parents, Christine, a parent of a 17 year old, has been attending the Parents Group at The Center at Bay Shore since October 2011. Christine believes that "for every scared and unsure child there is a scared and unsure parent as well." If you are a parent of a GLBT youth, no matter what your emotions, this discussion group is for you.
The Long Island GLBT Community Center has partnered with You Gotta Believe, a non-profit organization that places teenagers into permanent adoptive home to provide Adoptive Parent Preparation Classes at The Center at Bay Shore!
The classes follow a modified "MAPP" model and occur every Monday from 6-9pm at The Center at Bay Shore. The 10-class course is rolling, which means you can start attending at any time and complete all ten classes.
If you have been considering adoption to start or grow your family, this course is a great way to start the process.
If you are interested in participating in the You Gotta Believe Parent Preparation Course, call 631.665.2300.
