LIGALY was awarded the Elena M. Perez Award at the annual Bank of America Neighborhood Builders event. The award pays tribute to Ms. Perez who was Bank of America’s Long Island community relations officer, and who also served on the LIGALY Board of Directors in its early years. The award included a special $25,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to support LIGALY’s Safe Schools Initiative that works to address anti-GLBT bullying in local schools.
LIGALY’s Safe Schools Initiative is a multi-faceted program that works to create safer and more supportive schools for GLBT youth. The program delivers anti-bullying workshops in classroom settings, trains teachers to prevent bullying, helps students establish and sustain gay-straight alliance (GSA) clubs to provide safe spaces, and to implement school-based awareness campaigns.
